What Kombucha Taught Me About Marketing.

I have been the self-taught marketing manager of a local Kombucha company for about six months now. While I still have a lot to learn, these are my top tips on how to get started in marketing.

Tip 1. Find a strategy

Not all marketing gigs are the same. You have to find what will engage the targeted customers. Personally, with my company, I find that the customers love to see themselves, their friends, and their neighbors in the posts. I try to post pictures of the customers interacting with the product like taking group pictures of customers with their growlers full of Kombucha. That’s what gets the best feedback. After posting a picture of a lady, her friends and relatives are now more interested in the product we are offering which led to many DMs. Ultimately, we ended up with a few more customers.

Tip 2. Grow with the company

Marketing isn’t the same every day. You have to be ready to learn and grow with the company. When I first started marketing, I was doing something completely different from what I am doing now. In the beginning, I was only marketing on social media via pictures and ads. whereas now I am also making flyers and pamphlets because the company is growing and people are requesting more information. If you want to be in the same day-to-day job, marketing might not be the best fit.

Tip 3. Selling the product.

If you want to get into marketing but hate sales, you’re in the wrong career. You need to be able to sell the product that you’re marketing. You need to know what the customers want to see. You need to make the customers want to buy the product. In sales, you are solving a person’s problems by selling them that product. When I post on social media I am selling them on why they need to drink Kombucha.

Tip 4. Creativity.

Being creative in the way you market an item sets you apart from anyone else. When I send out an email blast, I always try to find a catchy subject that will make people want to read more. Something like, “ The overwhelming health benefits of this probiotic beverage”. People are intrigued by what’s different. Don’t be afraid to try a different style or a new creative angle that’s never been done before.

My takeaway

Finding a strategy, growing with the company, selling the product, and being creative are my top tips for someone starting in marketing. Marketing is a really broad field so continuing to expand your horizons is important. It is my hope, that if practiced correctly, these tips will give you the marketing boosts needed.
